In 1933 a 21-year-old young man - fresh from Canada and with no experience of farming - drove into North Wales and purchased a farm of 2,400 acres. In the shadows of Snowdon, it was mostly rock, thin soil, high winds and rainfall. For the next seven years Thomas Firbank and his wife Esme farmed Dyffryn with dedication and energy. Against the odds, they succeeded. They earned the respect of their farm-servants and neigbours. They built-up a healthy stock of over 3,000 sheep. They made improvements to the house and terrain, including laying-on their own electricity supply - and then rented more land.
